Montenegro Captures Gold at Super Fight League 45

(PRESS RELEASE) -- TACOMA, Wash. – Amy Montenegro defeated Glena Avila by split decision to capture the vacant Super Fight League America Female Strawweight championship in the main event of CageSport presents SFL 45 at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma on Saturday.

In a bout that rarely went to the mat and featured each fighter throwing and connecting on a barrage of punches, Montenegro (7-2) appeared as the 49-47, 48-47 winner on two judge’s scorecards with the third judge siding with Avila, 48-47.

This was the fourth time Montenegro has fought at the Emerald Queen Casino and the Tacoma venue has quickly become a favorite spot for the fighter. She has won three bouts locally, but her most memorable experience likely occurred on April 23, 2013 when her husband, MMA fighter Dex Montenegro, proposed to her following his victory on a CageSport card.

Undefeated Brent Knopp made his highly-anticipated return to the cage by defeating Jordan Currie by second-round TKO in the 197-pound co-main event. After a slow first round, Knopp took control of the fight once it went to ground, landing numerous shots.

Despite the punishment, Currie (6-5) was able to survive to the bell, but the bout was immediately waved off by the referee at the conclusion of the second round.

Knopp, who last fought two years ago, improved his career mark to a perfect 6-0 with the victory.

Thomas Hoeper (4-2) highlighted the undercard by posting a win over Robert Burgess (0-1) in a clash of 205 pounders. Hoeper took full advantage of his 6-foot-7 height as he ended the contest in the first round (4:46) with a Guillotine choke.

Patrick Benson (1-0) notched his first career victory by submitting Kody Kramer (1-1) with a vicious-looking knee bar in the second round (:38) of their 155-pound bout.

Also on the undercard, Rafael Brewster (1-0) scored a victory in his pro debut, defeating Nate Cook (0-4) with a front choke at the 1:36 mark of the first round in their 205-pound matchup, while the 145-pound Eric Cronkhite (2-0) overcame a slow start to defeat Daniel Elliott (0-1) by second-round rear naked choke (4:30).

Rounding out the card was Dylan Potter, who improved to 2-0 with his victory over Artiom Cula (1-2) by second-round KO (:38) and Journey Newson, a winner over Justin Hugo by first-round tri-angle choke (2:17).
