3. James Irvin vs. Terry Martin
UFC 54 “Boiling Point”
Aug. 20, 2005 | Las Vegas
Once the opening round concluded, the vast majority of the fans inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena were moaning and groaning about the lack of action. Irvin and Martin did their best to lull the crowd to sleep by clinching and doing virtually nothing for five full minutes. Apparently, “The Sandman” heard the displeasure, as he took matters into his own knee and wiped out Martin as soon as the second frame began.
Irvin casually walked out of his corner, built up momentum and then bolted into the air. Martin tried at the last second to block the incoming hellfire, but it was too late. Irvin blasted him with his left knee and Martin was toast. He fell flat onto his back, his head bouncing off the canvas; his arms were stiffened skyward as if he were demonstrating the proper bench press technique. As Irvin laughed and celebrated with his teammates, the unconscious Martin’s eyes remained open, staring out into the abyss.
It took Martin a few minutes before he could even sit up, but it took him much longer to figure out exactly what happened.
