5. Mark Hominick vs. Yves Jabouin
WEC 49 | June 20, 2010

WEC 49 was the only event the promotion held outside the United States, and Edmonton, Alberta, was treated to a matchup between the top two Canadian featherweights of the day. Jabouin had gone into deep waters with Raphael Assuncao in his promotional debut, while Hominick was in the midst of a fine late-career run that would culminate with a title shot against Jose Aldo at the biggest Ultimate Fighting Championship event in history: UFC 129.

The fight delivered action from the opening bell. Jabouin came out firing a steady stream of combinations, while Hominick looked to sit down and drop counter rights as Jabouin circled and threw. The two fighters combined to throw nearly 200 strikes in the first round alone -- a truly absurd volume of shots.

It was the second round, however, that made the fight a masterpiece. Jabouin opened proceedings with a flush spinning elbow that should have put Hominick to sleep instantly, but “The Machine” survived and replied shortly thereafter with a liver punch that put his foe on the canvas. Jabouin then landed a flush right cross that dropped Hominick to the floor. Somehow Hominick survived that, swept Jabouin into mount as he followed him to the mat and then rained down punches for the stoppage.

The scrap delivered action of the technical variety, incredible volume and insane displays of toughness from both men. The second round of Hominick-Jabouin is one of the best in the history of the sport, and the fight itself remains sorely underrated.
