Sherdog’s Top 10: WEC Fights

No. 6

6. Olaf Alfonso vs. John Polakowski
WEC 9 | Jan. 16, 2004

The first fight in the trilogy between Alfonso and Polakowski was a true slobberknocker. It was hardly an anticipated matchup -- Polakowski was making his professional debut and took the bout on only a few hours’ notice -- but it turned into an ultra-violent banger between two well-matched opponents.

Alfonso came out blasting with go-to-sleep combinations, and Polakowski dropped him with a counter right hand less than 15 seconds into the fight. Alfonso responded with a belly-to-back suplex. Both men were covered in blood and already swelling up less than 60 seconds into the fight, and it went on for another 14 minutes.

Neither fighter would go on to achieve stardom, but it was nevertheless a pivotal fight in the history of the WEC, as this was the first card broadcast on HDNet to a broad audience of fight fans. It set the promotion’s reputation as a home for entertaining violence, and it might just be the greatest fight you have never heard of.
