Preview: UFC 289 ‘Nunes vs. Aldana’

Malott vs. Fugitt

Welterweights

Mike Malott (9-1-1, 2-0 UFC) vs. Adam Fugitt (9-3, 1-1 UFC)

ODDS: Malott (-205), Fugitt (+175)

Judging by his placement on the card, the UFC seems to be getting behind Malott as its next big Canadian talent—something he has certainly earned with his last few performances. “Proper” was both an obvious talent and not a particularly interesting prospect for a majority of his 10-year regional career. Malott could find quick finishes against overmatched competition, but some of his other performances were somewhat aimless affairs that made his finishes seem more attributable to luck than any sort of consistent skill. However, Malott’s 2021 win on Dana White’s Contender Series and two UFC fights thus far have all been first-round victories that have shown off the impressive tools that he brings to the table. He may not be much of a range striker, but Malott is an absolute terror against an opponent who looks to engage him in close quarters, as he has snatched some submission wins and also blasted Mickey Gall with some pocket boxing. Opponents may look to outmaneuver Malott more once the book gets out on him, but for now, he has been an impressive force. Frankly, Fugitt does not look like the type of opponent to test out that gameplan. With that said, Fugitt has made a habit of playing spoiler in recent years, so he cannot entirely be counted out. He earned a late-notice UFC call by quickly knocking out Solomon Renfro in what was essentially Renfro’s hometown, and after giving top prospect Michael Morales a tough fight in a loss, Fugitt ran through another elite young talent in Yusaku Kinoshita. While Fugitt’s awkward aggression can overwhelm some rawer prospects, Malott looks to have the poise and polish to not only stay in the fight but take advantage of the opportunities his counterpart presents in a definitive fashion. The pick is Malott via first-round knockout.
