Sherdog’s Top 10: Mismatches

No. 2

2. Randy Couture vs. James Toney
UFC 118 “Edgar vs. Penn 2”
Aug. 28, 2010 | Boston

Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White decided to put the tired boxing-versus-MMA debate to bed at UFC 118 in 2010. He included one of the most iconic figures in UFC history, but rather than pitting Couture against a boxer at the top of his game, the shopworn James Toney was brought in.

Toney was a lifetime removed from his glory days as super middleweight champion and several years removed from his reign atop the cruiserweight division. Among the Sweet Science’s greatest trash talkers, “Lights Out” set out to prove that traditional boxers could hang in MMA. It did not go as he had hoped.

Couture was not foolish enough to stand and trade. He timed his first shot perfectly, tripped Toney to the mat and climbed into top position. Toney was the proverbial fish out of water. Couture applied his ground-and-pound before transitioning to the arm-triangle choke for the tapout. The charade lasted 3:19.
