After an ugly submission that lasted way, way, way too long before the referee intervened, the Calgary athletic commission will investigate the belated stoppage of the Sheila Bird-Kim Couture bout. According to a report from MMAWeekly.com, the Calgary Combative Sports Commission is already looking into the matter.
The women’s match at AX Combat 1 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, on Friday ended when Bird secured a leg scissor choke, with Couture’s head trapped. She went unconscious but remained in the hold for several unnerving seconds.
While we’re quick to highlight officiating oversights and errors here, we should also be quick to commend commissions for taking swift action to address them. We’ll keep you posted on the status of the investigation.
